What to Know Before You Get Started
What are the requirements?
Northern’s ECE and Elementary Education programs are open to anyone starting their bachelor’s degree — no prior education experience required. If you already have a bachelor’s or higher in any field, the Alternative Licensure Program gets you licensed to teach without earning another full degree.
Can I get credit for work I've already done?
Yes. Northern awards credit for prior learning, which can reduce the number of courses you need to complete — potentially saving both time and tuition.
How long does it take?
It depends on your starting point and program. An advisor can map out your specific timeline based on prior coursework or experience. ALP students typically complete the pathway faster than a full degree program.
Can I work while completing the program?
Yes. Northern’s programs are built for working adults. Coursework is flexible enough to fit around a full-time job and family commitments. Many students complete their program while continuing to work.
Are scholarships or financial aid available?
Yes — several options may be available depending on your situation. The New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship may cover up to 100% of tuition and required fees for eligible NM residents pursuing their first bachelor’s degree, with no separate application required. Federal financial aid, including grants and loans, may also be available. An advisor can walk you through what applies to your specific situation at no cost and no commitment.
